Design trends are constantly changing and updating, especially in the kitchen. We love to see people be bold, unique, and daring with their kitchen design and bring in new elements that have never been seen before. Many design trends come and go in the blink of an eye, but sometimes, there’s those certain ones that can redefine what you thought you knew about kitchen design. These five kitchen design trends have stood the test of time and don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
Shiplap
We know that everyone is probably tired of hearing about this trend, but shiplap is still going strong in the design world. For those who aren’t as familiar with this shiplap, it is wood paneling milled so that the edges fit together with a very tight reveal between (somewhere between 1/16” to 1/3” between each board). Shiplap can be applied anywhere: back of an island (like we did in the design in the kitchen photo above!), on a wall as an accent wall, above your fireplace mantle, and the list goes on. The best part of shiplap is that it is not just meant for one design style. You can incorporate it in any design style from farmhouse to industrial to modern depending on the color, thickness, or type of wood you use. You can put shiplap on every wall, or just create a nice accent wall as a nice focal point for your design. The possibilities with shiplap are endless.
Greys
If the 2000’s were all about the beiges and browns, then the 2010’s are all about the greys and whites. Instead of the classic white cabinets, many people are turning to grey cabinets instead. Many kitchen designs are using grey as the neutral base and adding pops of color through other design elements such as the backsplash, countertop, and hardware.
Two-tone Kitchen
If you can’t decide on just one color for your kitchen, why not do more than one? It’s becoming very popular to select two or more colors for your kitchen cabinets. Two-toned kitchens can have many different meanings and the possibilities are endless. You can have your perimeter cabinetry one color and your island another, you could do upper cabinets one color and the base cabinetry another, or maybe have your tall cabinetry and/or paneled refrigerator be an accent color. These are just a few examples of how people are thinking outside of the box with their design and adding pops of color throughout their kitchen. One of our personal favorite combinations is to do painted cabinets complimented by a nice warm wood tone cabinet.
“Marble” Engineered Quartz
Do you love the look of marble, but don’t want the maintenance, upkeep, and cost of marble? If so, you will love this solution to your aesthetic dilemma: engineered quartz with a marble look! There are tons of marble-looking engineered quartz out there and they come at a much lower price point and are much more durable than real marble. The marble look is timeless and classic, and we are all here for wanting to keep that classic look alive and well.
Matte Black

Many are afraid of dark colors in their kitchens, especially black, because they don’t want to make the space feel dark and dingy. However, pairing matte black with light and airy colors creates dramatic contrast and a bold-looking design that is anywhere from dingy. People are beginning to put matte black in their kitchen through hardware, plumbing fixtures, and cabinetry colors and we are here for it. Using matte black hardware and fixtures add a sleek, modern feel into your kitchen and can be used in a lot of different styles.
